You may have heard new reports where Alexa owners accidentally and unknowingly ordered products from Amazon that showed up on their doorstep unexpectedly.

There are a couple ways to minimize this from happening, both of which are part of the setup process for Alexa, but can also be later configured and customized using the Alexa app for Android or iOS - or on the web at: http://alexa.amazon.com/.

Toggle Purchase Capability

When disabled, no one will be able to purchase items from Amazon using an Alexa device.

  1. Launch the Alexa app.
  2. Tap the Menu tab in the upper left corner, choose Settings, and then scroll down and choose Voice Purchasing.
  3. Toggle the switch for voice purchasing on or off.

NOTE: This setting is per Amazon account, not per Alexa device. Setting this will affect all registered devices.

Set a Protective Purchasing Passcode

With a passcode configured, Alexa will require the code before completing a purchase. She'll say: "Tell me your voice code."

To set a passcode:

  1. Launch the Alexa app.
  2. Tap the Menu tab in the upper left corner, choose Settings, and then scroll down and choose Voice Purchasing.
  3. Enter a four-digit passcode and tap the Save Changes button.

NOTE: This setting is per Amazon account, not per Alexa device. Setting a single passcode will cause all registered devices to require the same passcode.
